''The Garage"

Today was the first day of shooting the show for the community access cable station.

The show is titled " The Garage" I'll be making speculative pieces for the show. Some tradtional and some contemporary and sculptural. Todays shoot went well, Jeff is a great guy too work with. I had a blast.

Here Jeff Ellis, the shows producer sets up a shot by the jointer. The show will probably air in a month. I'll have video of it on the blog very soon.

Guitar stand continue

Here is the finished prototype stand. The final product will be made out of birds eye maple and rosewood. The interior will get covered with an inch layer of foam and then upholstered. The guitar will stand in the box.

Prototype guitar stand

Today I cut the nest parts for the prototype guitar stand. The individual pieces were cut on the band and table saw. The notches were cut out on the table saw.

Here I test fit the nest pieces against the box.

The box is finished. All dovetails were cut on the table saw. It is always a good idea to check the piece against the drawings to see how they measure up.

Yesterday I started making a guitar stand that is based on the design of the tea box. The stand is not a traditional stand in that the guitar isn't hung up , it is placed in the stand. The final product will be made out of birds eye maple and rosewood. This is a prototype made out of pine.

The carcsae of the stand is connected with dovetails. This time I cut the dovetails on the table saw. There is always some hand work to do after.
I cut the tails first and then use them to trace the pattern for the tails. I did a full sclae drawing of the piece. It is always a good idea to check your work against the drawing for exact dimensions.

Tea is ready

Here is the finish tea box. I finished it with Watco Teak oil and wax. The lid for the tea storage is a piece of different mahogany. I like the contrast.

Bocote Accents

Today I added the Bocote accents to the nest parts and oiled the tea box. I used Watcos' Teak oil. I'll let this sit for a day and then add a coat of wax to add warmth to the project.

All of the parts have been sanded and the box has been glued together. Tomorrow I'll put a coat of Danish oil and wax on the box.

Tea Nest

Today I worked on the nest that the tea box sits on. I cut out most of the material using the table saw with a set of stack dado blades. I cut the contours with the bandsaw.

Elvis is in the museum

The Worcester Art Museum hosted an exhibition titled " Who shot rock"

It's a photographic journey of rock icons. Throughout the museum were life size cardboard images of rock icons such as Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and Buddy Holly.

I couldn't help myself, I had to have my picture taken with the King.

It's always amazing at how well all of the projects work out.

So Tired

During the Art Allstate Collaboration the museum host an exhibition for the Artist/Mentor. The piece I submitted is titled " So Tired" It's a chair that was a collaborative project between myself and two other artist.

The students did a great job adding color to their project by disecting the electrical wire apart and using the color wire inside to add color and they also cut up the binder covers and used them to add color

Art Allstate continued

The project is moving along quite nicely. On one wall is a lady they named Isabella wearing a large hoop skirt. On the other wall is a dragon that then comes out of the floor. The other walls are covered in clouds created out of the bags and electrical wire.

Crystal Cawley

Crystal Cawley is an Artist who resides in Portland , Maine. Crystal does awesome work, I've had the privilege of working with her at Art Allstate, NH in 2004 where we were partnered as mentors. Crystal creates beautiful paper and book arts. This year Crystal submitted a piece for the Allstate exhibition that was incredible. Crystal took old catalog cards from libraries and created pattern on them that when you fold on the lines they create miniature paper chairs of different design.

Here are more images of the project developing. The students draw ideas out and them construct the project with the materials supplied. Veronica and I chose white garbage bags and electrical wire as our materials of choice and the museum gave us grey paper and binders as surprize materials too use.
