On Sunday I delivered some drawings I have to the Imago gallery in Warren, RI.

The group exhibition I'm involved in is about the process of drawing.  As a furniture maker my drawings are mostly thumbnail sketches about design ideas and then they proceed to more working drawings.  I have to go back to the gallery this week and deliver a couple of pieces I have that evolved out of the drawing process.  I'm excited to be part of this exhibition.  

The wood pile

 I've had a large selection of lumber stored at my Father-in-laws place. Two weeks ago he brought it over for me on a trailer and I spent some time organizing and storing the lumber.  Today I sold more than 600 board feet of it. I kept a small inventory for myself.  My work process has changed over the past few years and I haven't used as much rough hardwood lumber as I use to.  I'm happy to see it go to a good home of a fellow furniture maker who I know will turn it into beautiful objects.

Imago Gallery

I'm involved in an upcoming group exhibition at the Imago Gallery in Warren, RI.  The opening is Thursday July 25th.

The exhibition is about drawing.  Not finished works of art but the process of drawing.  I have a few pieces in the exhibition.  Some are works in progress, some working drawings and some gesture drawings and thumbnail sketches. Even if drawing isn't our medium we all use the process of drawing to generate ideas and designs.  I'm  really thrilled to have been invited to participate in this exhibition.

Sunset on the deck

I love chairs, especially Adirondack chairs.  Nothing speaks more about summer time and relaxing than these chairs.  I was sitting on my deck relaxing when the sun hit these chairs I made last year.  I had to take this picture.  These chairs are made out of an old pine bookcase I took apart.

Lynch's one more time

I was at Lynch's package store yesterday and saw the planter boxes I made filled with plants.  I had to take a picture.  I'm really happy with the way they turned out.

Lynch's Complete'

Today I installed the planter boxes at Lynch's.  I'm really happy with the color matching.  The folks at Koopman's Lumber helped me out  with matching the color to the pieces  I brought in.

There wasn't to many surprises when I took down the old boxes.  I had to paint some of the old window sill  but other than that the installation went smoothly.  

More Lynch's

The planter boxes for Lynch's Package store are coming along nicely.  The molding has been applied and painted a deep forest green.  I like how they are turning out.

Lynch's - Almost there'

I've been working at the North Bennet Street School in Boston for the past couple of weeks.  I'm going in a few days a week for training and will be starting full time by the end of the month.  In the meantime I've been working slowly on the planter boxes for Lynch's package store.  The folks at Koopman's lumber  have done a great job on matching the color of the original boxes for me as well as the color of the molding.

The boxes are a barn red and the molding is a deep forest green. Hopefully I'll be installing them this weekend.

Lynch's - Continued

This evening I continued to work on the planter boxes for Lynch's.  The plywood box bottoms fit into a groove in the sides and then are glued and nailed together.  The cases are then covered with a two inch wide pine border  to add strength and character.  The corners of the boxes have a corner round edge attached to them to soften the boxes and to add strength.  The boxes will get a cove molding added to the case to match the molding of the exterior of the store.  I know that plywood and pine isn't that water proof but I have to work with a limited budget.  I'm also matching the old boxes that are there now, and this is what they're made out of.  If budget wasn't an issue I would use cedar.

'The Chair' Final Chapter

I finished my friend Glen's rocking chair on the weekend. I laminated a couple of pieces of oak together to get the thickness I needed to cut the curve of the seat slat.  I screwed the new seat in place and sanded it.  The chair works well.

Rocker Continued

Yesterday I made a new seat support for the rocker.  I drilled and countersunk screw holes in it to attach the seat slats.  I drilled and countersunk new screw holes in the front seat support as well.  I then attached the seat slats.  Today I'll make a new seat slat and attach it and the chair will be done with the exception of some light sanding.

Rocking Chair Parts

Yesterday I started working on my friend Glen's rocking chair.  The chair belonged to his grandparents so I'm honored to work on it for him.  The chair needs a new seat support, a new seat slat and some rungs need to be fitted and glued.  I have some oak that I'll use to make a new seat support with and a new seat slat.  I've repaired some rungs and the hand rail using blind wedges cut into the parts and then glued and clamped.

North Bennet Street Continuing Education

I'm so excited.  This week I accepted a position at The North Bennet Street School in Boston.

Megan O. Kenealy will be leaving on a maternity leave in June and I will be replacing her as Director of Continuing Education.  I wish Megan the best of luck and I hope I can fill her large shoes.  Above is an image looking out the door of the school in February.   

Lynch's

Yesterday my friends down at Lynch's package store asked me to give them a quote on replacing their window boxes.  It's not fine woodworking but it's work and they're fun to make.

Seaport seating

Yesterday as I walking along Boston Seaport area I came across this awesome bench.  Beside the bench was a sign that talked about the Boston design firm who created the bench.  The firm was commissioned by the city of Boston to design and fabricate seating for Bostons waterfront.  This bench is obviously  reflecting the waves and motion of  the ocean.  The image of the sign will explain more about the firm and the influences behind their designs.

Boston Family Boat Building

Yesterday  I was in Boston visiting a small school called 'Boston Family Boat building'. The small school's mission is to give 10 to 12 year old students a chance to experience using their hands and create a beautiful small boat.  The students mostly come from inner city schools within Bostons Public School System. These students get a chance to experience something that they normally wouldn't be able to.  The program is run by two dedicated people and the school is maintained by a parent organization called Third Sector New England. It was a glorious day out yesterday.  A perfect day to spend at Boston's seaport.  The school is located at Harbor walk right beside the Institute for Contemporary Art.

The small building is tucked nicely between all of the high rises.

NOA
